Does a male or female Hermann's Tortoise make a better pet?
I am going to buy a pet Hermann's Tortoise in the next couple of weeks. I have done lots of research in to the care of a tortoise and I am ready to have one but the only thing i don't have any idea about is what makes a better pet a male or a female?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Firstly, you will probably be getting a young animal. It is not possible to tell the gender of a tortoise until it is around 5 years old.
Secondly, now is not the right time to be buying a tortoise. In the UK, they should all be in hibernation until around the end of February and until the warmer weather arrives, it would need to be kept on a tortoise table indoors.
Third, please read these care sheets BEFORE you commit yourself to a tortoise;

Lastly, please consider giving a home to a needy tortoise through the re-homing services offered by both the Tortoise Trust and Tortoise Protection Group.

I have a female herman.
But to start with, when it was younger the vets thougth it was a boy, but its hard to tell until they are older.
Unfortunatly, she now has a boys name, Cornelious due to everything think she was a male :')
My point is, unless your buying a tortoise that is about 5 or more years it is very hard to tell weather it is a male or female.

Males make better pets. Females can have mood swings. http://zoocrewkids.blogspot.com/
