My buddy opened his soon to be ex-wife's email, is it illegal?

From his story, it sounds kind of stalker-ish, but he is going through a divorce, but he found out his soon to be ex has been meeting people on match.com, so long story short, he knew the password to her email account, got on and got the password for match.com and messed with her profile. Is anything illegal if he knew passwords and password hints? It sounds like an uncool thing to do, but she is cheating on him, still.

Update:

I know that until officially divorced, you are still considered married...separated is not an excuse to go sleeping around, unlike what most people do...not that I am defending this, just looking for opinions and answers...thanks!

Very unethical and a total invasion of privacy. Also totally childish.

I know she's cheating on him, that's a really low life thing to do but he's just made things so much worse. If they are living apart and she has the last changes to her profile traced to his IP, this could make things bad for him especially if she presses charges.

He needs to grow up and step back. Let her make her own mistakes, she'll screw up eventually. All he needs to do is be patient. He should hold his head high and retain his dignity while she skanks around.

they're dealing with a divorce, his spouse isn't "dishonest on him." She now has the right to stay her own existence. even once you've passwords and person names, that would not make it okay to move via a persons' digital mail and worse yet to modify the guidance in any of her costs, even if on line relationship or some thing else. it is truly indisputably "not cool" - it is surprisingly unethical and dishonest. i will't say for positive that it is against the law, yet hacking a persons' account can be a police matter, even if the criminal guessed the passwords. it would want to also be a civil matter for invasion of privateness. Your buddy is incorrect on many stages and needs to end it.

It's illegal. There's a federal law against it.

I forget what the exact law is called, but there was a case in Philadelphia where one of the anchors on CBS's nightly news got mad at another anchor for getting the promotion he wanted and hacked into her email account.

    He was indicted.

And really, if they're going through a divorce, she isn't cheating.

Illegal, probably not in the context that he was peaking and poking around.

Him finding what he found was not by accident. Perhaps she should change her password.

Maybe he should focus on just moving on!

No since he knew the passwords it's legal. HAHA I would love to see what he put as her profile.

If they are not legally separated or divorced, I doubt there is anything illegal about the action.

    Definitely unethical.

Eh, in order to sue him, she'd have to prove he caused her some type of harm, then she might have a case.
