How To: Becoming a doctor.?
So I want to pursue a career in medical field, doctor to be specific, but I don't know what type...
My question is what do I do in Grade 12 and after grade 12?
What do I need to choose as far as university goes? Do I get into a University of Toronto's Human biology program? Or Do I do something else?
What I need to know are the steps to do before I can get a job as lets say a General Surgeon.
I have to do Grades 1 - 12
then what?
****************
Also, would keeping Physics in grade 12 help me get into a university program? I mean would UofToronto decline my application because I don't have physics?
For the best answer, include links from UofT's Scarborough campus website.
:)
I live in Toronto, I am in grade 12 right now.

okay here is how it goes.....high school does not matter really at all (just to get into an undergrad college)
once you get accepted into college (it does not really matter where you go really...but try to pick "Science schools" like some schools are "arts" some other "english" pick one that is a "science school"
once in college you can be any major you want....but most people are biology
medical school only actually requires:
gen bio 1 and 2 with labs
gen chem 1 and 2 with labs
orgo 1 and 2 with labs
physics 1 and 2 with labs
calc 1
1-2 semesters of english
those are usually the only REQUIRED classes although many students take many more science classes....do VERY WELL in those classes...if you mess up you will regret it
Average for entering an allopathic med school (MD) in the US is gpa of 3.5 with an mcat of 30+ ....numbers a little lower for a DO school
You will take your mcat most likely at the end of your junior year (this is when you will apply to med school if you plan to go right after undergrad)
it is very important to have EC's during undergrad (volunteer hours, research, etc)
If you get accepted into med school you will do 2 years of classroom learning and then 2 years of clinical learning
after that you usually do 1-2 years of internship and then apply for a residency (sometimes this is combined with internship)
when you choose your residency you are basically picking what area you want to be specialized in (radiology, ob/gyn, ect)
pass all your tests along the way and you are set
goodluck
