Is my baby gagging or choking?

My baby is 8 months old. When I feed her food sometimes I give her a spoonful then she seems to get the food stuck and she starts gagging/choking (this really upsets and scares me as it can last up to 7-10 seconds and she doesn't breath during this time)... Then she brings the food up and cries... This has now happened 5 times since she was 7 months old and if i'm honest I'm scared in case it happens again.... But that's not the point.... Is my baby gagging or is my baby choking which is obviously much worse? Does anyone know the difference?

Update:

I feed my daughter stage 2 baby food 7 months + which is very mushy with very little lumps.

I would say she probably has a very strong gag reflex, what babies have to prevent them from choking. It is a good thing and it makes it so the food comes up rather than getting stuck. My middle kids are 4 years old and still have this, they gag up all kids of stuff if they don't chew it well enough, which is good because they don't choke on it.

Remember that eating food during babies first year is more about the experience and fun than about nutrition and a lot of babies are not ready for solids until a lot older, especially gaggers. I would say try giving her much smaller spoonfuls, and maybe water it down, or go back to stage one food. Also make sure you don't put it too far in her mouth, so she has to move it around and sort of chew it to get it down, then she is doing the right movements to swallow it right. Don't worry about feeding her too often as it is more about the experience, just make sure she gets enough breast-milk or formula, it is what's best for at least the first year anyhow. She will outgrow it and not gaga as much when she is more ready for food.

It is scary and although it does get easier it still scares me, especially when it lasts longer than a second or 2. Just leave her be though because if you pick her up or pat her back she might not gag it up and then she might choke. You'll know if it is a choke because it won't come up.

Gagging is a normal and good reflex where baby doesn't swallow the food all the way, and kind of coughs it back up because it needs to be chewed more. This is a learning process so they can figure out how much they need to chew before they swallow..

Choking occurs when the food actually gets stuck a bit. This can be very frightening.

It sounds like she's choking, as babies usually don't cry from gagging alone, and you said she doesn't breathe during these periods.

My reccomendation would also be to put her back on stage 1 foods, and give her smaller bites. If you're still having problems after doing this, take her to a doctor, and don't give her real food (just bottles) until you can go. This won't harm her, as someone else mentioned that food right now is more just for learning tastes and textures than for actual nutrition.

You can try getting your milk to let down then put your baby on the breast after the milk stops flowing freely. If it helps you will know that's the problem. I had this problem, my son had all of the symptoms other than choking though. After I figured out the issue I went to block feeding and it eventually resolved it's self.

A gag is usually a device designed to prevent speech, often as a restraint device to stop the subject from calling for help. This is usually done by blocking the mouth, partially or completely, or attempting to prevent the tongue, lips, or jaw from moving in the normal patterns of speech.

Choking is the mechanical obstruction of the flow of air from the environment into the lungs. Choking prevents breathing, and can be partial or complete, with partial choking allowing some, although inadequate, flow of air into the lungs.

So obviously your baby is choking. Try to dilute the food. If you can't find any that is thinner at the store, just add water before you give it to her. It sounds like it could be too thick for her. If it continues to happen then for sure call and inform her doctor.

sounds like gagging, if she looks like she is going to throw up, I would say gagging. My son did this with his rice/oatmeal cereal if I didn't add enough formula in with it. Try adding Formula/Breastmilk to it.
