Can I get some opinions on a voting age?

Generally, women are more intelligent than men (51% of students enrolled in post secondary in North America are women) yet it's absurd to say men shouldn't vote. The thing is the gap between someone who's 17 years, 364 days old and someone who's eighteen years old is even smaller. Just doesn't make sense to me and I want some varying opinions. Isn't it wrong to consider a seventeen year old any less of a citizen than an eighteen year? Isn't it outdated? Wouldn't a simple competence test on each of the candidates make more sense and be more a "21st century-ready" way of doing it?

I don't want any hate, I just want someone to explain to me where I'm wrong in my argument, or if you agree I want to hear your opinion too.

Look at statistics for US drivers and minimum age of 16 (typically) for a drivers license in any State. The maturity of an 18 yr old in driving is a 60% improvement rate over a 16 yr old driver, according to the AZ Dept of Transportation in a report issued in March. The Legislature will consider this Fall increasing the age to 18 for a full operators license, citing that 16 yr olds are the cause of 2/3 of in city accidents, and involve most accidents with multiple passengers. They also account for most fatalities and serious injury for high school kids involved in vehicle accidents. Voting is a responsibility and a right. It seems practical to limit voting to 18 and older, if for no other reason than accepting 18 yrs old as a common age for contractual consent and service in the Military. We need to leave well enough alone for the sake of the Country.

Personally I believe that life experience and a general knowledge of US National Government and Politics should be a prerequisite for voting. Unfortunately that would disqualify roughly half of those in the electorate. There is no need to lower the voting age, none at all. Not to "offend" you, but I know of very few 17 year olds who have any real life experience. We definitely do not need more people who vote for pretty words and empty promises.

Voting age should be 21, same as the legal age for drinking a beer. If you are too young and irresponsible to handle a beer then you are way too immature to vote in Federal elections.

The last election clearly shows that the voting age should be raised to 25. Anyone who has not graduated from college or been in the workforce for at least 5 years has no idea how the world works.

Lol actually a competence test would be good for all voters no matter what age. I like your idea there.

  • I think as soon as you pop out of your mom's oven you should be able to vote.
