Need help with my iPod touch?

Today when I turned on my first generation iPod touch, there was a picture up that was basically instructing me to plug my iPod into iTunes, and the iPod would do nothing else besides charge, show that same picture, or turn off.

So, I plugged it into my laptop and it said that I needed to enter the pass code in (my iPod has a lock code) in order to continue with iTunes. The problem is, I can't even get to the point on my iPod that shows the screen where I can enter in my password.

I have already tried letting the iPod lose enough power so that it full turns off, but as soon as I put it in my iHome charger when it is fully dead, the same picture comes up.

Does anyone know what I can do, or will I have to send my iPod into apple?

Have u tried when it's on holding down the menu and power button together to unfreeze it which resets and turns the iPod off, then powering it back on. It may take a few minutes to start back up.
