Upgrading hardware, is 64bit worth the extra?

My current (home grown) kit is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. So I'm thinking of upgrading the motherboard, CPU and RAM. The GPU is OK and I have Windows 7 which includes the 64 bit option so (I assume) I can just upgrade the OS without extra cost.

Is it worth going the extra mile and getting a 64bit system ? or would I be paying for performance I'll never use (highest use video editing/playback, not a gamer)

Are there any downsides to doing so ?

I don't mind spending extra if it's worth it.

Any advice or tips gratefully received.

Cheers

Everything is moving towards 64-bit computing. You can have more RAM with 64-bit computing and 64-bit programs run faster than their 32-bit counterparts. If you have the option, definitely go 64-bit. It shouldn't cost much extra (if anything) since pretty much all new hardware is 64-bit compatible.

Video editing is a major RAM hog. So the 64bit OS would be of benefit to u. 32bit OS can only recognise around 3.25Gb of RAM so u are unable to use more. With the 64bit u can cram as much RAM as your mainboard will tolerate....which will assist greatly in video editing, rendering, etc.
