Why can I not restore my sytem on my laptop?

Everytime I attempt to perform a System Restore on my Dell Inspiron 6400, it always reboots with 'Restoration Incomplete' and that my system could not be restored back to the requested date.

Yet it can not be restored back to ANY checkpoint date.

Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Try running System Restore is Safe Mode. I had the same issue on a Vista machine that I was running with Avast anti-virus on it, for some reason I could only get System restore to "play" while in Safe Mode.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. The screen will look strange, but don't panic. This is normal in Safe Mode.

Reboot once again to return to normal mode.

Reboot in Safe Mode. Go to Add/Remove programs and remove the newest Internet Explorer or anything else that was installed recently. This has something to do with the Software Distribution Service. Get rid of it. Please see the article from Microsoft below.

Are you prompted to install "Software Distribution Service 3.0"?

If you can't find what caused it, then view the log at C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log

and see what was installed around the time it happened.

You say that restore will not work ? but it does for any check point date. can you not use one of the check point dates to get to the restore point you want?

Why are you trying to restore? or are you trying to do a full restore ie: back to how the laptop came when it was new? if the latter than it is better to use the system disc's or follow the factory restore instructions you had when you bought the laptop.

your best bet is to buy a recovery cd for a Dell Inspiron 6400. Unless It is already there, try going into your bios and see if you have recovery option. hold f2 or delete when you turn it on. BUT DON'T MESS WITH ANYTHING ELS. look for RECOVERY. Doing this you will louse all but your os so back up what you want to save.
