why did my NO BEST ANSWER get disregarded and allow community to vote a best answer?
I asked Greek or Macedonian speakers to tell me the name of Alexander the Great in their language. There are two answers to the question. Not wanting to stir up the 'where is Macedonia?' debate that is rather contraversial in that region, I chose NO BEST ANSWER, and had a note that ASK YAHOO community would not be able to choose an answer. Now I have rec'd notice that a vote was permitted. Why did this happen? I accept both Megas Aleksandros and Aleksandros Makedonski as accurate for my purposes.
Yahoo gave me a NO BEST ANSWER option- so I chose it. It said the community could not vote. There are more Greeks than Macedonians I think (and Greeks think they have the only legitimate Macedonia). I got the information I needed. It is unfair to ALLOW a vote when both answers given (by a mix of respondants) are equally valid. Hence my "No Answer." Now I don't understand why people say that NO BEST ANSWER isn't an option, because it was both offered to me as a choice AND something I chose the DAY BEFORE my question expired! Since no one that has answered my questions has even got knowledge of the "No Best Answer" option, I am in the same situation this time!

You have to remove the question to prevent a vote on it. If you fail to choose a best answer, it rolls over to the membership.
Kinda stinks, eh?

There is no option for the asker to choose No Best Answer while the question is still open. Four hours after posting the question, the asker can choose a Best Answer. If you don't want to choose a Best Answer, your only other options are to delete the question or put it to community voting.
When you chose No Best Answer the question must have already gone to community voting. At this point your vote will be counted equally along with any other votes. In order for No Best Answer to carry the vote, that option would have to have had more votes than any of the answers.
As you say choosing a Best Answer yourself would have shown bias, letting it go to community voting was probably the best option. If you had deleted the question I think it would have been unfair to the answerers who answered in good faith.
edit:- I have just checked my open question, which has buttons for choosing best answer, but NO option for 'No Best Answer'. The asker does not get this option on an open question. The 'No Best Answer' button only appears when a question has gone into voting.
No Best Answer causes the question to be deleted, which the asker can do while the question is open, so a No Best Answer button on an open question would be superfluous.
If you selected No Best Answer this means that the question had already gone to community voting. The only alternative explanation would be that you have a different version of Yahoo Answers to everyone else lol.

If you do not pick the best answer for your question and it then goes into voting then you have no say over the answer that is picked. You could have picked one of the two that you wanted and left a comment for the other one saying you could only pick one but they also had a good answer. Even if you voted for no best answer other people get to vote also and the one with the most votes is the one that gets best answer. Hope this helps!!!

When a question goes into voting, your vote is as good as anyone's. So even if you are the asker and you choose "No best answer" someone can override your vote, and their answer would be selected as best. The only way to ensure that no best answer is chosen is if you delete it, but sadly you loose your 5 points.

If the asker does not select a best answer, a question is put up for a vote. If you did not want a best answer to be chosen, I think that you would have to delete the question.
