Word Doc file icon not showing up??!!?

It still opens the document just fine, except the icon that's supposed to show on the file is this generic thing....the same happens on all microsoft office files, like excel, powerpoint.
i have windows xp service pack 3, and the computer has recently undergone a lot of virus, trojan, spyware detection, registry scanning and deletion--would that have anything to do with the current situation?
I already tried choose default program method....plz hlp

You could try going into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and clicking on your Microsoft Office installation. Select Change and instead of removing/uninstalling the program, perform a repair on it. This should take a minute or two and Office will inspect your installation and repair things that are wrong with it, hopefully including the file association/icon problem you are seeing.
