How can I get a free upgrade on my flight?

Airlines will only give an upgrade if economy has been overbooked.The upgrade will be given firstly to holders of a frequent flyers card,and then to those who are appropriately dressed.The days of giving upgrades just for the fun of it are long gone.

Do you have any status with the airline that you are flying? If not, then you are pretty much out of luck. If economy is oversold (but they have seats in a higher class open), they will upgrade people with status before they upgrade people with no status. If the flight is totally oversold, they may look for volunteers to take a different flight. Sometimes you can get an upgrade with this, but your chances there are slim.

It will be next to impossible! Those days of getting upgrades are almost gone unless you know somebody on the crew or the airline overbooked economy.

As to other ways, about the only ways that don't involve sexual favors will require elite frequent flier status. I'm guessing, since you're asking, that you probably don't have that.
