taking OTC cold meds mixed with daily Claritin? What will happen?

I take Claritin 10mg prescribed by doctor.

This morning I woke up with an awful cold and not thinking too my allergy medicine. My sinuses and ears are aching so bad I can not even hold the phone up to my face at work. I want to take something to help that is over-the-counter but I do not know if it will mix with my Claritin.

I'm at work and can't be falling asleep at work so I am nervous to take anything. I think a few years back I took some OTC cold medicine with it because my Dr. told me to but I am not sure.

Anyone know? I am going to try running to the pharmacy at lunch but my ears are killing me.

Ideas, suggestions, anything!

Update:

thanks everyone who answered thus far (and for all answers coming in still)!

I did call a close by pharmacy and was told that it would be okay since the perscribed allergy meds have a difference effect than something otc BUT not to take anything otc that says "for allergy relief also", which could contain the same thing as the Clairtin and cause a reaction.

He also gave me a good hint to take Sudafed since they tailor their meds to be more specific to your symptoms. (usually what I take anyways but good advice!)

My eight year old daughter takes Claritin nightly (2 teaspoons) & also is on Advair & has an emergency inhaler (Pro Air) to help her cope w/ allergies that also have a tendency to affect her breathing. When she's sick I'll give her Tylenol Cold & Flu every couple hours to help alleviate the stronger symptoms that are brought on by the cold. This has all been ran by her pediatrician, who has told me that this is ok. However, each person, & their medical conditions are unique, so I'd recommend talking to your doctor (or the head pharmacist, if your doctor's unavailable) to see what type of reactions you could experience. It sounds to me like you may have an earache or sinus infection & may need antibiotics, which can only be prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to schedule an appointment w/ him or her to confirm or rule out those diagnoses. Also, make sure to follow the medication's dosing instructions carefully.

may i ask how old you are? and in a responsible relationship? the first majorly important thing: DID YOU TELL YOUR DOC YOU MAY BE PG? even a seemingly "harmless" antibiotic could be harmful to your baby, esp now. i doubt amox would be, but you need to keep your doc in on this. you had to have seen a doc to get amox. why arent you asking her/him? they could have done a blood test to check for pg much earlier than many women's HCG levels rise enough to register on a pee stick. LOL it's possible - it's always POSSIBLE - that you are pg. you would have already ovulated if youre always on schedule, but you said the "last" time you had intercourse, not if you had it around 02.23.2013-ish. do you have a Dollar Tree store? just go grab a pg test from there. $1. cant go wrong w/ that. they are the SAME THING as the expensive ones at the store. if you have good med insurance, get the blood test from the doc. i have sinusitis and it makes me nauseous and gag and even vomit constantly. it's post-nasal drip. the mucous drains somewhere, right? so why not down the back of your throat enough to make you wanna get sick? that's *exactly* what happens when it's severe enough. has your doc told you how to treat sinusitis? it's simple but you have to be CAUTIOUS. first you need a humidifier. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS and use ONLY DISTILLED WATER and wash it daily w/ dish soap - antibacterial. you can also take benadryl (again, always get generic - same thing, just cheaper: generic benadryl is DIPHENHYDRAMINE). it comes OTC in 25mg. take 2 Q4-6H. (2 pills every 4-6 hours). get a SINUS RINSE KIT. that is absolutely THE best thing for sinus probs! omg. you will LOVE IT! just be sure to breathe thru your mouth and you will just get addicted to it! LOL you can make your own saline, but the packets are much easier. you just mix w/ DISTILLED WATER ONLY. be VERY METICULOUS IN CLEANING AND SANITIZING THE KIT WHEN DONE EVERY SINGLE TIME. have you heard of the "brain eating amoeba/bacteria" that ppl got from swimming or using a Neti-Pot? that's why. it's TRUE. last alert from the CDC that i read was in NOV 2011. check it out if youre not sure. do not get the neti-POT. get the (usually Neti brand) sinus RINSE kit. it's a bottle w/ a tube and cap to squirt saline up your nose. you will not gag on it. it doesnt burn. it feels wonderful, cuz it clears your nose out! i was so bad the first couple times i did it, the water wouldnt go thru and out the other side. finally it did and OMG you shoulda seen what it dislodged up in there! LOL TMI? a lot of ppl do well w/ the OTC antihystamines (allegra, claritin, zertec), but if youre severe like me, you wont get any benefit. AGAIN, YOU MUST KNOW IF YOU ARE PG FIRST AND IF YOURE TRYING TO CONCEIVE, WHICH MEDS ARE SAFE. ASK YOUR DOCTOR - NOT AN ONLINE FORUM!! ALSO ASK YOUR PHARMACIST. you'd be surprised how much more they know than most docs do. every day i get sick from this. so yes, yes, yes, absolutely it CAN make you nauseous or if you get lucky like me (sigh) you have no warning and vomit no matter if you can get to the bathroom or sink or not. oh yay. good times. GOOD LUCK! leave more details if you have more q's or contact me (add me as contact, i left that feature on to help out folks like you). hope you have a BOY! :) just a side note: i hope youre planning on nursing. you will NEVER regret it! the bond you share is something you will never get any other way! :)

I had day and nite capsules by benelyn. they were great. it came back again though so i went to docs for antibiotics as it went on my chest. if it does not clear up after a couple of weeks go to the docs, get antibiotics to clear it up.

I THINK BEFORE ANYONE MIXES MEDS....THEY SHOULD CHECK WITH THE PHAMACIST OR DOCTOR...MIXING MEDS COULD BE DANGEROUS EVEN NATURALS MEDS.
