Survey for new parents... regarding your children's oral health.?

I am a dental hygiene student and one of my assignments is to attend a new Moms group and teach about childhood oral diseases, demonstrate tooth brushing techniques and answer questions about infant and child oral health.

What kind of information would you be interest in learning?

What kind of questions do you have?

I'd be interested in learning anything honestly. (sorry no help I know)

As for question: When are you supposed to make their first appointment (everything I have heard/read says something different evertime. Everything from "when they get their first tooth", to " before they start school"), it is confusing.

How old should the child be before they visit the dentist for the first time. I can't get a solid answer.

What's the difference between the "learning" toothpaste and the kids toothpaste? I heard it was something to do with fluoride, I don't know!

    What age is mouthwash appropriate?

Typically, how long do you brush to get a clean mouth?

    Is brushing the tongue necessary?

Obviously, how to brush, how many times a day when you are beginning brushing. When should you take your child to the dentist for the first time, and when do you take them thereafter. What should you do if a tooth gets knocked out. Those are just some things that came to mind... hope it helps.

How do you get a toddler to let you brush his teeth? I've tried making it fun (growl like a lion, really loud! and let Mr. Toothbrush count your teeth! and even buying a Thomas the Train toothbrush that plays music for 2 minutes). My 2-year-old won't open his mouth at all, and if I try to force it open, he bites me. I've tried making it fun, I've used fun flavors of toothpastes. Part of the problem is that he wants to do it himself, but all he does is sit there with the toothbrush in his mouth without moving it. My other kids I would let them do it first and then do it after they finished, but he won't let me do that either. That's what I would want to know.
