How can I stop my 78 year old mother from driving?

My mother has been driving 60 years now, and was a great driver....BUT now she is awful! she hasn't got into an accident but that's because she has been lucky. she drives through stop signs, slows down at intersections for no reason, starts driving off before the passengers are in the car, (they are half way in!!) she thinks she is a good driver and certainly won't take my advice?? any suggestions?? and I can't just take away her keys either.

Update:

PS: my mother is always right!!! lol and has never listened to advice from anyone, trying to gently say that her driving is bad will only make her mad. she just got a newer car last Oct. and will not think of selling it. besides she owes more than it's worth. and until she has an accident or gets a driving violation the DMV can't revoke her license. any other ideas???

she has become a hazard on the road....how would you feel if she killed herself or someone else...you need to stop that from happening...call the police in your jurisdiction and explain the situation...they can require she take a competency test...if she fails they will take away her licence...it's very sad but better than the alternative....promise her you will drive her to where she needs to go or buy her a bus pass, or pay for some taxi fares etc... hard to give up her independance but it has to be done for the safety of everyone

that is usual... You cant take her car and go away.... you could try to convince her like "if you sell your car, you can buy that furniture you like..." or something like that... Or you can talk to her and tell her the situation.

PS: If she hasnt got a hobby or what to do at home DONT stop her from going out. Its their way to have fun etc. Really it will not be a good idea if her basic activity is going to the mall and if you take out her car..(you would be cutting all her activities...)

If you cant convince her, just dont let her drive with passengers like kids or so.... If you are going out, drive yourself

Ask the DMV in your area to stop by and speak to her or send out a letter saying that she is ineligible to drive. Or ask for an envelope and type up your own letter.

People her age are stuck in their ways.

Talk to her. Tell her that it worries you for her to drive now and maybe she'll understand. Of course you can't force her to stop, but probably if you talk to her, she'll start being more careful or she'll compleatly give up her driving.

    Hide her keys
