Are churches in Canada REQUIRED to allow gay weddings, or can each church make its own decision ?

I have heard many American Christians aver that they object to gay marriage because churches would be required to perform marriages against their beliefs/ How is it working out for our fine and tolerant Neighbors to the North?

Update:

edit:

I was actually pretty sure that churches could follow their own conscience in this matter. I have tried to explain that to the folks who use this tactic to defend their own position, but they can't seem to grasp that a law has to be constitutional to be valid, and that the state will not interfer in their rights.

(My sister and her now-husband of 26 years were refused marriage by the church my parents had belonged to for decades. A church can deny it to anyone for any reason.)

No Canadian church is required to perform a gay wedding. The church is free to turn couples away. It's the government that can't refuse them.

And as for how it's going here in Canada since they were allowed, pretty much as you'd expect - you can't tell anything has changed at all.

Well in Ontario the churches can make their own decision as to perform or not. So not all churches perform gay weddings.

So far as there are quite a number that do perform so there are plenty of choices for those so inclined to marry.

No, churches aren't required to perform gay marraiges, and the Constitution protects their right to hold that belief.

You know, I'm not sure. And I live in CA. I'd like to know this too, as I have a couple of gay friends.

Luke Weiss, you should be reported for that answer. Homosexuality has absolutely no connection with beastiality.

This would be a better asked in the law section or Canada section. I don't know what the answer is.
