I need grammar help?

Which of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

1. Calm and kind, my goldfish Happy is obviously one unusual companion.

2. Calm and kind, my goldfish, Happy, is obviously one unusual companion.

    #1. The appositive is essential, and should not be set off by commas.

    #2 is technically correct, but you could probably get away with #1 as well in an informal setting such as a letter.
