I have bought and sold domain names and entire web sites on eBay. I recently listed some domains on Sedo for the first time. Payment has depended on the amount -- small amounts via PayPal, larger amounts by certified check or wire transfer.

I suspect that you have another question buried under this. Are you trying to decide where to buy or sell a domain name? Are you thinking of starting your own domain-marketplace web site?

I would go directly to the owner.... I have many names listed on Moniker and Sedo, but the one's that I have sold have been by people who contact me directly though whois.net...this is much better for me anyway, as I do not have to pay a 10% comm.

Your local bank can handle the escrow if the amounts are large--or small. Paypal wants too much for their fees. So if it is under, $2000 a money order or cashier's will work just fine. However, you can and should use escrow for any reasonable amount. It just protects both parties.

Also, I agree with the poster above...there is more to this question:-) Here fishy fishy come get the bait:-)
