My rabbit has a lump.?

My rabbit is a near 5 year old spayed female and usually very healthy and happy but this morning I found a hard lump on the right of her bottom jaw it is very hard but not hot and doesn't seem tlo hurt her. I am taking her to the vets in the morning but does any one have an idea if this is cancer or a cyst. Thanks for any answers.

Hi there, wonderful to hear that you have a vet appointment. Most likely this is an abscess, which different vets treat in different ways. ..depends on the cause. It can be from an imbedded piece of hay in the gum, a tooth root, or bacteria that has followed a crack in a tooth to the jawbone, and formed an abscess. It most likely is not cancer, although for many rabbits, it is an ongoing treatment, almost like cancer. Your vet might want to start by giving oral antibiotics, or perhaps injections of penicillin, (pen. should never be given orally to rabbits!)Or might want to do a bit of surgery to take out the lump...might be a tooth that needs to come out, hard to say.

Abscesses in rabbits are made of a hard material (not like pus found in other animals)....and form bumps like that...some do have pasturella bacteria in them, but there are a lot of different bacteria that can make up abscess...btw,blaming everything on pasturella is sort of old fashioned breeder type mentality, and not really what an up to date pet vet would say...so you might want to keep that in mind if this is your first try at a vets.

If found early, like you did, there is probably a better chance of bunny getting treated and not having more trouble. If it is left to get worse, the eyes, breathing, gut, etc can be affected.

Whatever the vet chooses (and there are many other ways to go, too) please try to get some good pain medicine. Sometimes the diet needs to be adjusted, and softened or cut up food given for awhile, too. for more information, go to

Good thing you found that and knew what to do! you have a lucky bunny!

hiya. It appears like the two a lump of fat or a cancerous tumour. basically make certain he's ingesting good. If the lump will become larger, it truly is in all probability to be maximum cancers. Is the lump complicated? regardless of if it truly is delicate with smallish lumps interior, then it could desire to easily be a fat lump. yet your mum is suggesting a solid theory through fact in case you wait and it is going down or disappears then it became maximum probable a fat lump or a blister the place he had rubbed against something. i does not leave it too long not likely to the vets. Wait a optimal of two days then make a journey to the vets. i'm getting this now and back with my rabbits and approximately 80 5% of the time it truly is a blister! desire I helped you out - solid luck :)

My rabbit has a large soft ball under her chin. What is it, and do I need to do anything about it? (Justine, England)

The lump under you rabbit's chin may be a "dewlap". Female rabbits have them. They use them to pluck fur out of them for their nest when they are kindling (giving birth to young). However, they are also prone to abscesses and if there is irritation or the lump is larger than normal, it would be sensible to take your rabbit to the vet. While the abscess may burst eventually, your rabbit will probably need antibiotics, and the lump may be something more serious.

that is somthing I got off a website, but it may not be true. Your best bet is to go to the vet ASAP so he/she can check it ouT!'

    GOOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

It could be an abscess caused by pasturella.

If your rabbit gets put on antibiotics make sure it is from this list, certain antibiotics can kill rabbits and a vet who doesn't know rabbits might put her on an unsafe antibiotic.

I guess only further tests can definitely tell. Good luck at the vets.
