Help! My dog won't stop chewing!! He's destroying my apartment..?

I have a male chihuahua, he is 8lbs and going to be 2 years old this summer. If I stop paying attention to him for 2 mins (say to oh, go to the bathroom) he will start riping the carpets from the floor boards and chewing holes in my couch. I've tried the bitter apple spray - he seems to enjoy it and it certainly doesnt turn him off of biting. I've also tried crating him when he has done one of the above mentioned, and that doesnt work either. Does anyone know of anything that can cure him of this biting..before he destroys my entire apartment!

Update:

And YES he has tons and tons of chew toys...nylabones galore

Have you tried orange rind as dogs hate citris. Or chilli powder?

If you catch him doing it say 'AH!' in a loud deep voice. Then give him a toy instead. Then use the high happy tone to tell him how wonderful he is.

Sounds like he's doing it for attention. Have you tried general obedience training? Also, make yourself the pack leader if you aren't already. Pretend to eat his dinner before giving it to him as the pack leader always eats first. Walk in the door first. Don't have him sleep with you. Don't have him higher or as high as you (eg on beds, on the floor, on a chair). If he learns his place then he might stop being so mischievious.

Apple Cider Vinegar or Cayenne Pepper.. the vinegar stinks though..

You cant crate him for punishment - at all.. thats not the way it works. You crate him for that to be his home - his safe place. Then when ur going to be gone you crate him to keep him from chewing - not as punishment after he's chewed.

He also needs lots and lots of exercise - he's getting bored and anxious when you leave.. so don't leave him out when you go anywhere..

Take him to a trainer because I imagine ur going to have a hard time with this.. they'll give you good pointers because that was backwards what you did .. A CRATE SHOULD NEVER EVER BE FOR PUNISHMENT!!

EDIT: Its not for lack of chew toys - never is - the poor dog is bored and has lots of energy you need to help him get rid of..

He is being a brat! Don't let him have the run of the house till he learns some manners. Take him into the bathroom with you so ya can keep an eye on him. If this makes you nervous, put him in his crate.I would only let him out of his crate when you can keep an eye on him and to go pottie. Is he neutered? If not,get him in for some snipping. It will help both of you.

Give him some chewy toys of his own.He is bored.Take him for a long walk to wear him out, then into the crate for a nap.I would have started him in a playpen.Really.Could be his own private chew place.Put toys, old towels, bed, whatever. You are the boss, you must show him.You are alot bigger than he!Take charge of the little beast.Get him a pal to play with and they can both stay in the playpen.Unfortunately he has become the ruler and you,well......you know the rest.

Some dogs never grow out of this chewing phase. I would just offer appropriate toys or chew bones. It sounds like you have an anxious dog with high energy so first take him out on a long walk to burn up extra energy. Then at home, give him good chew bones that will help relieve his stress and tension. You may also want to enroll in obedience lessons..this will help stimulate his mind and is good for bonding with each other.

if she has a tendency to chew certain things in the house spray them w/ ethanol rubbing alcohol. ethanol rubbing alcohol has a chemical in it that causes a gag reflex, so humans can not get a cheap buz. so once ur dog smells or tastes that, they will never chew anything w/ that smell again. DO NOT USE Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol!!! That can be highly toxic.

Perhaps instead of "paying attention" to him, you could take him out for a proper walk.

Even an 8 pound chihuahua is a DOG.

    P.S. Crating does work.

Discipline the dog and provide him with lots of toys and chews. When the dog chews discipline the dog and replace your carpet with one of his toys. Take the dog shopping. Crate is not used for discipline.

Does he have toys or chew sticks? That may help.

    Tell him, "NO"

    "bad dog"

I have that same problem but she is all grown up now
