the titling head back works for some , others find putting their heads down towards their lap for a moment or two, and pinching your nose while you breath through your mouth, if you can. I've done it both ways. It depends on how heavy the flow is . I've had headaches leaning over , or down, as my balance is a problem some times, because of my situation. So during that time whe it is a problem is when I tilt my head back. I've never choked on my blood or gotten dizzy that way. It all depends on the person. You need to try and see which works the best for you.
Preventing them from happening again maybe hard. As you need to know the cause . What were you doing when it began. Nose bleeds can also happen from altitude changes or allergies..
You may want to have a dr check it out. Try to keep a log of the nose bleeds , to see how often it happens and what you are doing when they happen Do you get hea aches with them. Or vision problems.

The days of tilting your head back have gone!
The person should sit up and lean forward, so that they do not swallow blood.
Pinch firmly over the top (either side) of the bridge of your nose for at least 10-15 minutes MINIMUM until bleeding stops.
If bleeding continues then you are not pressing in the right spot, reposition fingers and re-apply pressure.
If after two-three attempts, the bleeding continues, take yourself to a doctor who will then apply appropriate treatment of wads with solution to stop the bleed.
Do not put your head back - if complications occur, you could choke on the blood.
Put an ice pack on the back of your neck to help reduce your temperature a little.
All the best.

Please pay attention, what I am about to share with you is going to sound strange and weird, but believe me it works. How I don't know or what causes it to work I can't explain but it works. My sister and I were in Houston having dinner at Pappadeoux restaurant when my nose began to bleed. I went into the men's room to get some towels to wipe it when this fellow that was in there told me about an "OLD" wives remedy. Take a paper towel, any type of paper towel only about an inch or so wide, fold it up four or five times and place it between your top lip and gum. In one to two minutes my nose had stopped bleeding and did not ever start again. I know this sounds crazy but it actually works.

Pinch the lower nostrils and tilt your head forward for ten minutes. If the bleeding continues you may have to have the vessels cauterized by your doctor. Finding out why it is bleeding so long will be helpful.

Hold your nose tightly towards the top, plugging it up. Hold it for 5-10 minutes. That SHOULD make it stop.
My son has frequent nose bleeds. If that is happening to you, you may need to have a doctor cauterize it.

Tilt your head back and pinch your nose at the bridge. If this doesn't stop it in a couple minutes have someone drive you to the hospital.

Hmm, its bleeding for a long time. All i know is that you should put your head back and squeeze the bridge of your nose. If that doesnt help and it continues bleeding, you may have to call emergency room and see what they tell you.

nip the top of your nose. and tilt your head just a little back. I get nose bleeds all the time and its so annoying, but most the time they last a little while, but sometimes ages. A few years ago i got it cortarised (sp), but it didnt help. Hope its ok!
