  • Is expanded polystryene foam a bad idea for a basement?

I am going to be using rigid foam to insulate my basement during a new-home construction. From what I have read, extruded polystryene is preferable as it is closed-cell and a vapour barrier is not required. What I have not been able to find out is if there is any problem with using expanded polystryene with a vapour barrier instead? I have read a fair bit that says ONLY use extruded, but I cannot figure out why?

I know that I will get a small R-value benefit with extruded, but extruded will be double the price.

Any particularly good reason not to use expanded foam?

  • Is it alright to install the main electrical panel in an attached garage?

I am having a house built, and the electrician recommended that the main electrical panel be placed in the attached garage, due to the entry location of the above-ground electrical line.

Is there any reason to be concerned with having the panel in the garage, or is that a normal and acceptable way of wiring?

    I am in Canada.

  • How can I convert a coaxial video signal to component?

I am looking at purchasing a TV that only has HDMI and component inputs. As this TV will be traveling in an RV, there will be times where I will want to connect it to an antenna that only has a coaxial cable. Is there a relatively easy device that I can purchase that will be able to convert the coaxial cable signal to work with component cables?

Thank you in advance for your help!
