  • 2002/E46 Noise under car?

One of my friend has this 2002/E46 316i/1.9-8v, only done 47'000miles with last BMW service 2 years ago, but since last november, it start to make some cranking noise when starting in cold mornings, its not constant, just a few seconds of loud clonking, but overall the car seem to be much more noisy than my 2007 model. The noise seem to come from under the middle of the car, may be more towards the front , some one said it may be the Cat Converter.

The car overall is like new and not been driven hard , the other problem is idle rev, when at traffic stops, the engine seems to drop then rev up , this can go on for a few minutes until the computer regain control , the rev counter just goes up to 1'000, drops to 500 then up then down.

One of the BMW place replaced one of the sensor, seem to cured the problem for about 2 weeks then back it came, according to the computer, thats the only fault showing at the time 3 months ago, anyone have a clue what shes looking at to solve this one ?

  • WOW !!! 10 points to those who answers !!!?

I really hate these questions, as if they are paying you with something for your help or answers, and with comments like 'only answer if you know what you are talking about' thrown in just for good measure to pxxx you off.

  • Anyone been ripped off by computer repair guys ?

I watched a programme on UK TV last night about computer repairman, I were horrified to what length they go to :

PC were built by an expert, all this were filmed, the expert losen the graphics card so it wont display, call this cowboy firm because they had a lot of complaints, he arrived in a shinny new BMW, had a quick look and said the graphics card is gone, most likely the memory too, took the PC away,

Next day he called and said the graphics card had indeed gone, and the memory also, cost to repair ? £350 I think around that mark, next day he returned with the PC and said the cause is teh power supply, so as a goodwill, he replaced it free of charge.

After he left, the expert had a look, and found the cowboy replaced the graphics card and power supply with a cheaper model, plus he stle half the memory thats installed, total cost for these parts in value is around £200.

So a simple push back in job now cost almost £550.

Anyone else had this experience before ??
