  • Why does canola oil polymerize?

I was told that vegetable based oils are not good for external lubricating because they polymerize and hold contaminates. Why does polymerization occur and how can it be stopped or slowed down? I have read a few things from google but no one offers ideas on how to prevent it. I would like to use it on a few rotating items that will be near veggies and water sources but do not want to take a chance on contaminating the food or water with regular oils.

    Thanks for your help

  • How does the LHC work?

Ok so I know a fair amount about the Large Hadron Collider from the information they have released. High speed particles shot through beams called collimators around 17 miles circle near speed of light almost absolute zero temps.....on and on so I don't need that information.

What I don't know is HOW are the collisions observed and recorded?? What instruments are used to detect the collisions and more importantly, how are they taking pictures of the collisions? I guess it will alot to do with the beam distortion when a collision is made and somehow this information is recorded allowing a computer to generate an "image" of what occurred? But from what I can tell, the beams are very, very exact and any variance in this requires the protons in the beam to be "dumped" and a new beam has to be started because a wondering beam can cause serious damage to the LHC.

So will someone, or many of you, please enlighten me on what you know about the detection, recording, and imaging of the processes inside the LHC and if this information is not available, what are your ideas?

I have not searched online for any info, I figured the intelligent people here would be able to provide a more insightful view.

i asked the astronomy people now for the physics people. mayan calendar ends..ok. so what. but what about these tests many countries are running in the event of a polar shift. I have heard alot about it and I dont know if something will happen or not but I know I cant stop it. Just curious to know what other people think about it and what they believe might happen.

  • what do you think will happen 12-21-2012?

I just figured I would ask and see what you guys thought this 2012 end of the mayan calendar polar shift ice age whatever might bring. So what, if anything, do you think will happen.

No right or wrong answer, just curious as to what other people think.
