Does Home Depot mark numbers on tools?

I just bought a Milwaukee Impact and the number 19 is marked on there where the battery goes. I'm assuming it was from Home Depot because on the box is a sticker with a big barcode and the store number, and also the number 19. Why do they mark them?

    So that they can marry up the battery and the machine it was paired with at the time of manufacture.

    if you didn't buy it from HDepot, it may have been stolen from their rental tools.
