Why are hermit crab owners who prefer to put their crabs in a 55 gallon tank with deep substrate considered crazy?
I have had hermits in the past and my family thought it was crazy when I told them hermits require a tank bigger than 20 gallons and I had been told by several groups that hermits needed 29 gallons and bigger and in between 6-10 inches of substrate. When I was growing up in the 90’s, we had hermits but kept them in my brother’s bed room with no lid and 1 inch of substrate so both my mom and my brother, who adopted my crabs from me, both thought that was all that was needed.
My brother had spent hours beforehand looking at the information I gave him from the Hermit Crab Association and had Googled some stuff. He chose to believe they were easy to care for. Within a couple of months, he lost interest in them, and gave them to a couple of kids. Because they were “stinking” too bad and he thought all they did was sit there.
