Why do majority of STEM based jobs ask for PhDs?

Not everyone can afford let alone an BS or MS, let alone a PhD. So, why are these so-called STEM-based jobs asking for a PhDs. There are jobs that will accept BS or even a MS but majority ask for a PhD. Why so much after a PhD when someone with 5+ years of experience with and MS can provide the same thinkings and efforts?

Update:

LOL, I get original thinking and all but not everyone can afford a PhD. There are MS programs that require originality in thinking in terms of new projects and people can still be sufficient enough to lead the programs. There are PhDs that make people work on already-developing ideas.

Update 2:

Just check it out on LinkedIn, Indeed and other career sections. A lot of require PhDs and not everyone is capability of earning a PhD depending on their circumstances. Some people can still develop original thinking with time. So, this general stereotype that all PhDs generate independent thought process isn't always true. There are PhDs who still rely on older protocols.

Its not so much the qualification that matters and what is required to get it

MS does not require original thinking, just learning stuff that has already been worked out, and regurgitating it

A PHD requires original thought and experiments/research to work out the bits you need to find out to complete your own original idea

that is- there is stuff you have found out that NOBODY knew before YOU worked it out . And THAT means you cannot rely on ANYBODY to help you work it out

THATS why they are looking for PHDs cos they have already displayed their ability to do this

(you can ONLY get 5 years experience on stuff thats already known - Its IMPOSSIBLE to get it on stuff that NOBODY knows)

What field particularly? I'm not sure about technology, engineering & math but if physical sciences like biology, chemistry, etc. then yes, a lot of jobs are more upper levels like post docs, principal scientist, associate director, lead scientist, etc in comparison to those that don't require a doctorate such as associate-based levels. It's a bummer to see this but I guess companies like those so-called doctorates in comparison to those who can;t even afford that education depending on their circumstances. I know it sucks but it is what it is.

People interested in STEM, know that's not remotely true.

STEM means = science, technology, engineering and math.

Any one who can do basic bath knows "majority" is over 50%.

And no where close do 50% of STEM jobs "ask" for a PhD.

First 3 engineering jobs in my neighborhood on Indeed:

Boeing = Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an engineering or science related field.

Electrical Engineering Manager (no company name) = Bachelor's (Preferred)

    Molear Inc = Bachelor's (Preferred)

Gotta keep dangling that carrot.  They want you to suffer like the rest of us.

uh, thy don't.  Very few engineers, programmers. and technicians have a PhD, for     xampl.  Many resrch or university professor jobs do, though.

That isn’t true.  Most STEM jobs only require a four year university degree.
