Should I get a lawyer before I apply for disability or vise versa?

I plan on applying for disability in September. Do I need to hire a lawyer before I apply or apply and then get a lawyer? Or would it be better to get a lawyer if I'm turned down? (I've heard you always get turned down the first time.)

Thanks.

How can you wait 6 months to apply for disability? If you can wait that long you are not very disabled. You should get a lawyer now.

Don't need a lawyer unless you aren't successful.

What you've heard is NOT true.  I've done 4 applications for friends and they received benefits on the first application every time.  Just make sure you have SUFFICIENT and SPECIFIC medical info in your file.

It wouldn't hurt to get a lawyer.

It is never a bad idea to seek representation before acting.  Doing so can allow you to avoid making some mistakes on your application which can turn out to be a hurdle down the road.  But doing so just assumes your application will be rejected which may not be the case.
