why is religion so popular around the world?

Only way to haven the rest are lost

Because it gives people a reason to riot.

Because people continue to experience God for themselves, no matter what they call him.  Think again, pard.

we were created with the desire to worship someone other than ourselves.  We know we did not just happen.  Just as a man listens to his father we listen to our heavenly father.

people's fear of unknown and greed wanting to live forever and see deceased loved one's again.

People are generally scared of death.

We're a group-selected species,  The groups with religion retained cohesiveness better than those without.  See the Old Testament.

Because they're smart enough to know we humans aren't the ultimate authority.  Price keeps many others from recognizing that.

Science is hard, but any dolt can believe in magic. 

It's easier than doing scientific research, faster too.  People are scared and want something to latch onto.  People are ignorant and impatient and want easy answers.  Religion fills a lot of perceived needs, and of course there are plenty of people willing to take advantage of this, and yes, gasp, for profit.
