There is no single "best" place. There are a lot of things to do in the Dallas area, Houston, San Antonio, and many smaller cities. Tyler has some interesting things. Also there are many state parks.

That depends on what you consider fun generally, San Antonio, Austin and Houston have a lot of fun things to see and do.

San Antonio or Dallas. Both have many options

San Antonio. The Riverwalk area is a great place to hang out, with loads of restaurants and live music. I've gone there numerous times on work trips and really enjoyed it. Fredericksburg is fun too. There are loads of wineries and you can take a wine shuttle so you can go to lots of them without driving.
