How can someone avoid from making a conversation turn out dry?

Listen to what the other person is saying so you can respond with something that makes sense. Too many people just wait until the other person stops talking to say something completely unrelated and that's when conversation stalls.

It doesn't require anything except a real interest in the other person and the ability to listen. Most people like to talk about themselves. Ask some questions. Prompt them to keep the conversation going. "What's the most interesting place you've ever been?" "Scottsdale."  "Really? What did you like about it the most?"
