In Morse Code, “SOS” is a signal sequence of three dits, three dats, and another three dits spelling “S-O-S”. The expression “Save Our Ship” was probably coined by sailors to signal for help from a vessel in distress.

SOS is an old emergency signal which was " Save our Souls".

    all ********.

In 1904, the Marconi company suggested the use of “CQD” for a distress signal. Although generally accepted to mean, “Come Quick Danger,” that is not the case. It is a general call, “CQ,” followed by “D,” meaning distress. A strict interpretation would be “All stations, Distress.”

It is meaningless.  Those letters were chosen because they are the easiest Morse code to remember - three dots, three dashes, three dots.  Claims have been made that it stands for "Save Our Ship" but that claim falls a part when it is used on land.

I don't think SOS stands for anything. It was probably chosen because it is easy to make out. You have three short (dit) and three long (dah) then three short. If you key it fast it almost sounds like an emergency. dit dit dit  dah dah dah   dit dit dit.

It's the same way with CQ meaning "calling" in Ham radio. The two letters C and Q don't stand for anything, they just have a distinctive sound:

dah dit dah dit  dah dah dit dah.

It stands for the same thing as the "S" in Harry S Truman's name - - nothing. [Did you notice that there was no period after the "S"? That was not a typo.] The Morse Code "SOS" was selected because it was a simple, easy to send code: ...---...

It does not Nor Has It EVER meant Save Our Ship, Soul, or anything else. It’s INTERNATIONAL Morse Code! Japanese Mariners would not know what the hell “save our ship” means. It’s actually sos with a line over the top. That means you send it as one character, not three.   . . . - - - . . .  It’s a letter of its own. It’s never spoken. The word you’d use is Mayday. A previously used Morse Code signal would be CQD.

    Source(s): Ham operator/telegrapher since the 60’s.
