I wish I could remember the author's name, but my favorite was something called "Mistress Malapert".   It's about a teenage girl in 16th century England who, disguising herself as a boy, runs away from home and joins a traveling acting company run by none other that William Shakespeare!

My favorite childhood book was 'A Wrinkle in Time' by Madeleine L'Engle. I thought it had a powerful message about the sublimation of personality. I thought at school at the time that the teachers were trying to do this. It was sad to see so many students  brainwashed to 'love' their school. It was my introduction to cultism.

I'm a senior citizen now but when I was about 8 years old, my older sister who was a teenager at the time would read Victoria Holt's Gothic/ Horror Romance novels and tell me about them. Well forget that, let me read one and OMG it was no more baby books for me.
