Should I send a sympathy card to my aunt-by-marriage?
The brother-in-law of my mother's sister-in-law just passed away. I wanted to know if this relationship is close enough to warrant sending her a sympathy card. I don't know how close she was to her brother-in-law.

Seeing as you don’t know how close they were I would hold off. I think you might be better off saying how sorry you were in person or over the phone. If after that conversation you feel it is appropriate to send a card you could do so. Another thing you could try doing is asking your uncle her husband if the situation warrants a card or not. My guess is most likely not.
But if any card is to be sent I would send it to the widow of the man who died - if you knew them. Don’t bother sending one of you didn’t know them. You could let your aunt know you sent her sister à card.
