It's the fear of being rejected or hurt. If you don't look for it then you maintain your personal idea of being safe and happy. However you are also missing out on opportunities. There is a film called 'Yes Man' and he actually discovers that by saying yes instead of finding excuses to every life opportunity he gets a promotion, goes to cool parties and gets a girl friend.
