Can anyone explain how this voting system works?

Looking at the states lead, is say Trump is ahead. But the Electoral College numbers show Biden is in the lead.

Different states have different numbers of electoral votes based on population. California, for example, has 55, while Alaska has only 3. So although the map looks mostly red, the number electors in those states is fewer than in the blue ones.

While there is some subjectivity in this, who's "ahead" often based on projections of who will win what states, not simply on current official Electoral count.

Biden has more votes, does that matter?

You mean the number of states?  Some states are worth much more.
