Popeye cartoons?
Does anyone know what the meaning was behind 'Whimpy' always saying...
" I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
I know.
@Laughing BOY,
Nope...Not even close.
There WAS a meaning behind it.
Change 'meaning' to ' significance '.
There is a certain ' significance ' in the statement.
It has to do when the cartoons were made and what was going on at the time.
Okay....
No one wants to try.
The ' significance '. is..
The cartoons were made during WW2.
At that time it was against the law to buy or sell meat on Tuesday..
Through that rationing it allowed meat to be supplied to feed our troops.
So no one could legally collect any money ON TUESDAY for the hamburger.

It's because Wimpy never came around on Tuesdays.....that's why.
(so he would never be able to pay you on a Tuesday)
