Air fried chicken.?

I have a hot air oven. I see these TV promos where they show fried chicken that looks just as good as pan/skillet fried chicken.

I follow the instruction on preparation and cooking. It always comes out looking like it's uncooked.

The breading is still white with black/burnt spots on it.

If I keep cooking it...it just gets blacker and way over cooked.

It's not brown, flaky and crisp like it would be fried in a skillet.

The oven works just fine cooking on the rotisserie or in the rotisserie basket.

It cooks pizza OK. All though it takes a long time, by instructions, it dehydrates well too.

Just the fried chicken and fish comes out ...BLAH!

Update:

Anyone one else have this problem. Or has anyone conquered the problem?

Update 2:

Yes it's an 'Air Fryer'

If I have to spray oil on the chicken then why not just fry it?

It'd take less time to fry it in a skillet also.

This answer assumes you have an air fryer. I have one and sometimes cook chicken in it. It sounds like you are trying to work without fat on the outside of the chicken. I cook boneless skinless chicken breasts in an air fryer. I try to bring them to room temperature, then liberally spray them with olive oil. I use a shake and bake, roll them in the breading, then spray them again. I put them in a mesh basket and don't move them much when cooking. I've never tried a flour/egg/bread crumb coating because of the lack of oil when frying.

Are you spraying some oil on both sides of the chicken when you put it in the air fryer? It makes it browner and shinier.

    I use spray canola oil.

    Not sure if you mean

    - convection oven

    or

    - air fryer

I assume the first (though in fact they are very similar).

I wonder if you have it set on the wrong setting

    or

if one of the settings (the one you use for chicken) is not working correctly.

Maybe...try Shake and Bake and see how that turns out.
