A device is a unit of physical hardware or equipment that provides one or more computing functions within a computer system. It can provide input to the computer, accept output or both.

Usually people mean your phone or tablet when they say "device".
But a device can also be a card or accessory you add to your computer. If Windows doesn't know how to talk to a printer, you would add a bit of software called a device driver to provide the ability.

It isn't necessarily in the computer. It can be something connected to the computer such as a printer, wireless adapter, external hard drive, etc.

"device" is short for electronic device such as computer, laptop, tablet, cell phone, gaming platform, etc.
