Is it normal to see someone discouraging you as a form of insult?

    Not always. It just depends on how it is taken.

    Depends on the people involved and the context.  It can, in fact, be insulting.  As can so many things...

    Only if you're very insecure. The person may be trying to help you. If my 5'8" daughter told me that she wanted to become an Olympic gymnast, I'd tell her that most gymnasts are under 5'4" and start as young children. That doesn't mean I don't love her and think she'd be great at a lot of other things. It's just realistic.
