Essential, no.  Personal preference, yes.

Not unless he's seeking a career in the military or as a bodyguard. 

I have learned to use small concealed weapons. This totally eliminated any need for hand to hand combat.

No.  I am 61, with 43 years in the military, and have never once been engaged in hand to hand combat.

Running is better.

Not necessarily essential, but useful. And surely a great party trick 😂
