Son of a witch, that's a tricky question.
Maybe the foods they eat makes them floatulent.

Actually, if you survived this torture, you would have been accused of being a witch and more than likely have been publicly executed.
It was thought witches had rejected the rites of baptism, so running water would have rejected them. Same test for suspected wizards and magicians. See lore on how vampires allegedly can't cross running water. There's all kinds of weird stuff out there.
