Had I infringe a copyright if I didn't know a name of the author of one open source?
It only came to light later that he was a honorable university teacher...

depends on how you used it ... if you used it for money making, yes you can be sued.

It's copyright infringement whether or not you realized it when you did it. It's your responsibility to know what you're submitting, and you certainly knew that they were not your words.
