The problem for understanding how magnets work is that classically they are at the bottom of the hole. They just behave how they behave because that's how they behave and you can't dig any deeper. All you can do is flesh out magnetism with Maxwell's equations (and Relativity if you are keen) to include electricity. And in terms of quantum mechanics, well, no one understands quantum mechanics.
