Because of how exciting it is and because of how easy it is to play.

Thrill: The game itself is exciting throughout the duration of the game. If a game doesn’t get your adrenaline pumped up (irrespective of being a player or a spectator), it loses its importance as a source of entertainment. Try visiting Kolkata during a match between East Bengal & Mohun Bagan, you’ll understand what adrenaline rush is. (I am not even talking about European & South American football!)

Because everyone loves what ever I happen to hate. That is the way it usually works.

Football is like watching paint dry. Being dead is less boring, because you know nothing about it.

It's become very popular in US schools because every player plays all the time--nobody warms the bench. It's also very cheap for kids--you don't need any special equipment, just a ball and you can improvise a couple goals. It emphasizes speed and dexterity and brainpower over brawn and muscle and brute force.

It's not popular as a professional sport in the US because it doesn't stop dead every couple of minutes to allow for a commercial break. Hockey has the same problem.
