First grade teachers claimed that parents should not help first graders with their homework (even if the child asks for help.?

Is this true and if so what is the rationale?

Kids need to figure some things out for themselves, there is a line though. As to how long you allow them to sit trying to figure it out. Many parents do not teach, they do, but think they are teaching. Robs the child long term.

Most parents give *too much* help. They end up giving the child the answers, and not the tools to solve the problem. That does not help the child in the long run. The best the parents can do is try to instill in the child the desire to do the work and a lifetime interest in learning.
