Because people are foolish and don't know a good name when they see it. I mean Mortimer was the rival of Mickey Mouse in cartoons in the late 1930's, so maybe that's why?

Probably because 'mort' is French for 'dead' or 'stagnant' and Latin for 'death', so it may be thought unappealing.

The English surname Mortimer originates from the French town of the same name, which originated in it's standing beside a stagnant lake (a mort mer).
