Savage kid over here, I like it.
Sadly, Apples to Apples doesn't have a direct "strategy" to practice to win. It's not the same type of game like Risk, Chess, Checkers, Monopoly, etc. where learning and practicing strategies can lead to success.
Apples to Apples is simply a card game where you try and put down cards you think will win the round. Whether or not they win depends entirely on the Judge that round. You want to think about what kind of person they are and pick your card according to what /they/ might think is funny or goes well with the judging card that round.
You'll get some funny card draws and some boring card draws, so if you think a card will win, play it for sure, but if you think it /might/ win, but could do better on another round, you may want to hold onto it for later and play a weak card, simply to "throw it away" and make room for a potentially funnier card.
Also watch for how close someone is to winning. I believe 7 rounds won means game over, so if 1 or 2 people are at 5 cards you might want to start playing the cards that /might/ win because if the game ends while you still have funny cards in your hand, you missed a chance to win a round.
If you're playing with adults/teens, you could always study the cards a bit and Google names/words you don't know, so you understand the pop-references you may never have heard of while they would have. Then you'll understand why it may or may not be funny to play a certain card at certain times.
