Christians -- What do you think Christ is telling you in Matthew 7:24-27?

Matthew 7: 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Jesus is saying that it isn't good enough just to hear Jesus' words. It isn't good enough to hear and believe Jesus' words. Faith in Jesus requires putting Jesus' words into practice.

He's saying what he is teaching is a good foundation for a belief system--one that won't collapse from its own instability.

In His parable of the two home builders, Jesus taught that the storm comes to the wise man who builds on the rock just like surely as it comes to the fool who builds upon the sand (Matthew 7:24-27). The storm will come to all.

If you live your life based on the teachings of Jesus, you will be able to weather any storm that comes your way.

Every one that heareth these sayings of mine. The words that he has spoken in this discourse, and all his teachings.

I will liken him unto a wise man. The wise man, with wise forethought, has built on a firm foundation. In a country with a rainy season and heavy floods this was essential. The man who "hears and does" Christ's words is building upon the rock (Mat 16:16).

The rain descended . . . and it fell not. Palestine is a country of torrents and sands. This verse gives a picture of the sudden violent storms and sweeping floods which are so common during the rainy season. The house founded upon the rock could not be undermined and destroyed, but would stand firm. So, says the Lord, shall it be with those who hear and obey. "They shall stand in the judgment" (Psa 1:5).

Heareth these sayings . . . and doeth them not. The hearer who obeys not is likened to the foolish man who built his house on the sand. Every one knows how transitory and shifting is a sandy foundation. Whole towns on the Missouri or lower Mississippi have been undermined and gone into the vortex because they were built upon the sand. So will fall the disobedient.

Great was the fall of it. The Lord describes the thoughtfulness of the builder on the sand, the storm and the utter destruction. There is an awful solemnity about this close to the wonderful sermon.

He means that to be a Good little Christian. Build your Godly life on very solid Ground. !! Pretzels Baby !!

Jesus had just finished talking about those who used his name but didn't actually have peace with God. They claimed many acts they thought were God's will, but they weren't doing God's will and were under false pretense.

So then Jesus began talking about building on something other than putting Jesus' words; his teachings, into practice, they would be akin to those building on sand, not the foundation Christ laid. Their supposed 'good works' would not stand because they built on their own effort, rather than God's will.

It means that His teachings are the basis of our faith. Everything else is built off of that. His teachings on obedience, submission, humbleness, freeing our self from sin, repentance and yes love...all of them. Any teaching that does not tie back to that has no place in our faith

(and before you go there, moral and sexual purity and marriage between man and a woman are on that list)

I will tell you what I think it doesn't mean.... It speaks of hearing Jesus' words and putting them into practice....but your hearing must be right.... for He says elsewhere in several places

"Therefore take heed how you hear"

and we could adduce the following as a great example

Matthew 22

Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
