Confused on investing in stocks need help.?

Reading investing for dummies by Eric Tyson and he has wonderful information on strategic plays to keep your bank accounts healthy, but I m finding his advice on stocks bland. Its conflicting with things I ve learned. He says precious metals aren t worth investing in and only buy a stock if you plan on holding it for 5 years or more. Im trying to get a solid grasp of how it all works, but everyone I listen to is contradicting eachother. Ive been studying for weeks and i still feel like im in the dark. I just want a solid foundation before I invest is it just me or is it just a leap of faith for the first few investments until I find my own strategy?

Any books you recommend?

Any tips?

Thank you

Investing in stocks requires a good knowledge of the subject and should be left for experts. That's why there are so many mutual funds in existence. For most people who do not have the technical and financial background, a good way to invest in stocks is to buy shares of an index fund, such as those available from TIAA-CREF, Vanguard, Fidelity, and others. Index funds have very low fees, are highly diversified, which minimizes the risk, and if you invest the same amount at intervals, such as every month or every other month, you benefit from getting more shares when prices are low, ad fewer shares when prices are high, which in the long run ensures a lower average price and normal market returns.

He's got something like 50 pages on stocks. Everything from ticker symbols, to price to earnings, to reading financial reports, to reading the newspaper stock quotes, etc.

Of course it's bland, it's supposed to be a how to, not a murder/mystery. Rarely have I read anything technical that was a page turner.

Goodness, he's not going to pick your stocks for you. He can only give you the basics.

Go to the bookstore, or search Amazon for books. Books on how to pick stocks are out there by the ton. Legendary stock picker Peter Lynch has written a handful of books. And I'm sure there are others.

One Up On Wall Street - Peter Lynch

The Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graham.
