Do you have to use any type of sealant when crafting with leather?
I am interested in making a leather pouch for a hatchet I have recently purchased. I was wondering if you have to put a dye on the leather or if you can leave it natural. Also, seeing as how it would be used outside, I was wondering if you would be able to seal the leather with something to keep it water proof or if that is necessary. Do I need to have a dye with the sealant? I have many questions about this aspect of leather crafting so any hints and tips would be appreciated!

I made my dad a freaking beautiful leather wallet in shop class a few years back, but didn't put any sort of leather preservative on it - I know, being lazy and in a hurry - and within six weeks it began to show stains from his handling of it. He kept his hands clean, but it didn't prevent the staining. It's a quick and simple process to put a sealer on - I'd suggest y'do it. Tandy Leather carries a variety of such supplies...
